Commando to Canvas
I never planned on becoming an artist. I joined the Army at 16, served in 29 Commando Regiment, and deployed to Afghanistan as a Section Commander when I was just 20. After leaving the military, I became a builder but mentally, I was struggling. Like many veterans, I carried things I couldn't explain.
In 2017, after a hiking trip in the Lake District, wanted something on the wall to remind me how that place made me feel. I couldn’t find the right painting, and I couldn’t afford one anyway, so I decided to try painting something myself.
My wife laughed in my face when I told her, and to be fair it was a funny moment so I don’t blame her. But still I gave it a go.
The first painting was terrible but it helped quiet the noise in my head. That was enough to keep going and painting became my escape. Then it became a routine. Then, somehow, a new life....

Supporting our Veterans

I'm proud to support Phoenix Heroes, a veterans charity offering immediate PTSD support. A cause close to my heart.
In 2019, just before Covid hit, I went through a rough patch. My wife reached out to a well-known veterans’ charity to get me some support, but demand was so high and staff were stretched thin. I was passed on to another large organisation, and it took nearly three months before I was assessed and offered the right kind of help.
What got me through that time, without even realising it, was painting. Art became my life line. I still have days where I need outside support, and complex PTSD will always be something I live with, but painting makes life a whole lot easier.
That’s why I support Phoenix Heroes, a growing nationwide veterans charity offering something that makes all the difference - instant support. No long waiting lists. No passing from one place to another.
I want other veterans to have access to the help they deserve, so I regularly donate original paintings to Phoenix Heroes for auction and run art therapy days for veterans and their families. Every time I donate or host a session, I’m reminded how art can help heal and that gives me real hope. Especially when people stay in touch, keep painting, and show me what they’ve created.
